When asked to produce a painting of Kirkby, Mark remembered that many of his ancestors originated from the area, working in the local industries there before moving to Sheffield and the steel industry.
He visited the town in winter to get a ‘feel’ of the streets and locate a viewpoint that would suit his style of painting atmospheric urban townscapes.
Using photographs from the past, present and sketches, the finished painting is a fusion of Kirby then and now, with the iconic Regent cinema transformed to its former glory.
